In today's consumer-oriented world, where consumers can buy wherever they want, however they want and whenever they want, logistics has become a key competitive factor. Flexible, economic sorting solutions that combine speed with precision are essential.

Performance, reliability and efficiency are the key factors for success in today's market. The deciding factor in the face of customers' growing expectations is the Internet. "Ordered today, delivered tomorrow" became the rather ambitious promise of the large retail chains, and it is what most customers expect. If deliveries take longer, people are not going to like it and this will make itself felt not only in the rating systems found on the many social networks, but also in the loyalty of customers.

Competition is tough. If you can deliver faster, you get the business. But one of the problems encountered here is that customers are entitled to return purchased goods. What does this mean? In addition to normal day-to-day business, the returned share of goods has to be dealt with, too. This can add up to as much as 60 percent and is a risk to profits. In this complex and challenging market environment, logistics is a significant competitive factor. The ability to provide accurate sorting of a wide range of different goods in growing quantities at even faster rates is a top priority.

Speed in sorting on the basis of intelligent concepts

The Interroll Crossbelt Sorter is based on a patented mechanical drive principle, which combines sorting precision and maximum availability with speed. In comparison with other sorting technologies, the mechanical cross-sorter shows clear advantages in terms of operating costs, energy efficiency, space requirements and flexibility. Thanks to the powered transportation of the goods from the crossbelt carriers to the respective end points, basically any kind of goods can be sorted with pinpoint precision, from extremely light objects with smooth surfaces (e.g., advertising leaflets and polybags) to bags of dog food weighing up to 35 kg. The distance to the end points can therefore be kept to a minimum, which saves space.

This cannot be realized by alternative sorting technologies. And with regard to the maximum or rather the ideal speed and system throughput, Robert Lugauer, Managing Director of Interroll Automation GmbH, confirms that:

Throughput rates of 2,000 to up to 15,000 items per hour can be handled smoothly and efficiently. Our many years of experience with sorting projects throughout the world has shown that the throughput rate the customer wants—always close to the system's limit—can often be improved by intelligent in-feed concepts or layout concepts.


Cross docking: Balance between periphery and sorter guarantees persistence of the system

The so-called cross-docking factor also needs to be taken into account. This means that what is going on at the periphery is important in terms of performance and can increase or even reduce the throughput efficiency of the sorter. According to sorting expert Lugauer:

When a balance is established between the periphery and the sorter, the system will be able to work reliably in the long term and guarantee the availability people want. That is the key factor for success!
