Warehouse Logistics
The storage system provider Mecalux received the order from Procter & Gamble for a pallet flow storage system with a storage capacity of 19,500 pallets. Together with Interroll and K-LOG storage systems, Mecalux implemented a highly dynamic concept.

Productivity and resource efficiency are the challenges of modern warehousing. However, in view of continuous changes in business processes, changing product ranges and increasing order numbers with decreasing batch sizes, the existing structures cannot keep up with the current demands. With Retrofit projects you can modernize internal logistics to the state of the art - during continued operations and at low cost.

Sustainable Retrofit concepts improve warehousing

Through the use of efficiency-optimized and energy-saving drive systems, through lightweight construction of the components as well as low rolling resistance material combinations, energy consumption can be reduced by a double-digit figure.

According to experts, the modernization of automated warehouses can open up optimization potentials of up to 30 percent by improving stock availability and reducing personnel costs for warehouse management. Another advantage over new projects: Retrofit measures can usually be performed cheaper, faster and during operations. And through intelligent, sustainable Retrofit concepts you can combine efficiency and flexibility with modern aspects of green logistics to your advantage.

The Procter & Gamble production site Crailsheim near Stuttgart successfully implemented as a part of a Retrofit project at the distribution center a pallet Roller Flow System and thus expanded the site to become a central distribution center for operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Even here, measurable improvements of approximately 35 percent were achieved.

In Crailsheim, P&G equips its distribution center for householdpaper towels and hygiene products with shelf technology and dynamic storage technology by Mecalux/Interroll to expedite the flow of goods and to increase the storage filling ratio.

Dynamic storage systems for more capacity

The compact space- and energy-efficient storage block store the goods according to type and the concept of "first in, first out" in gravity-driven flow channels at channel depths of six Euro pallets. To improve the flow of goods, pallets are already dynamically stored upon arrival and at the tour deployment in the shipping area. Flow storage modules integrated inflow channels with a four percent grade make use of gravity and let the pallets roll energy neutral and on track from the picking to the extraction area.

This means that goods can be stored above the passages between the shelves which results in a significant increase of capacity to 170 percent. Matthias Schmitt, at the time head of the logistics center of Procter & Gamble: "The new concept allows us to use the existing building of the distribution center much better and thus respond more quickly to the needs of the market."

Retrofit key products for internal Logistics

In the conflict between economy and ecology, Retrofit projects offer a variety of options that can be implemented at short notice according to the requirements of resource efficiency and optimum use of time, space, staff, materials and energy. Comprehensive Retrofit projects including project planning to technical assistance and quick installation and implementation achieve long-term and sustainable plant modernization at low total costs.
