DAMA SpA, owner of the exclusive fashion label Paul & Shark, operates a central warehouse in Casciago, Italy, that supplies merchandise to the company’s global network of retail outlets. The systems integrator Alpi Sistemi S.r.l. has modernized the warehouse to increase productivity by 150 percent.

All the company’s goods pass through DAMA’s central warehouse. There, they are temporarily stored, packaged, labeled and prepared for shipping to the global dealer network. The 27,000-sqm facility is divided into several levels according to the types of merchandise to be stored, such as folded and hanging clothes. DAMA commissioned the systems integrator Alpi Sistemi to make several improvements to improve workflow and efficiency. The integrator designed and installed a tailor-made system that merges the various elements of the material flow into an integrated solution.

Intelligent RollerDrive improve efficiency

A key element of the new solution is the handling of numerous packages that are picked in the distribution center and shipped from the shipping area of the warehouse. After thoroughly assessing needs, Alpi Sistemi installed Interroll’s modular conveyor platform equipped with the 24-volt RollerDrive in the shipping area. Alpi Sistemi integrated a range of functions, including automated weighing, barcode reading, volume measurement and labeling as well as a software interface into the conveyor system.

Andrea di Cesare, Head of Logistics and Operations at DAMA, is more than satisfied with the new solution. “We wanted to install an automated system for sorting, closing and labeling packages,” he says. “The goal was to drastically reduce delivery times, increase productivity and deliver shipments with greater reliability. Alpi Sistemi and Interroll collaborated superbly in delivering a solution that far exceeded my expectations in terms of functionality, smooth operations and energy consumption.”

Because the Interroll conveyors are delivered mostly preassembled, the system was easy to install. The conveyor modules are also extremely quiet and energy efficient. Maintenance and minor repair work can be carried out during ongoing operation, and due to its modular design, the Interroll solution can be optimally extended at any time to meet future requirements.

Conveyor system increases productivity by 150 percent

DAMA achieved its goal of shortening delivery times and increasing productivity by nearly 150 percent with the new conveyor solution implemented by Alpi Sistemi and Interroll. If changes are to be made, the necessary adjustments require only a brief interruption of the ongoing operation or none at all.

Stefano Gornati and Roberto Mombelli, Directors of Alpi Sistemi, are proud of the achievements: “Our philosophy is based on the consideration of ethical issues in decisions and outcomes, respect for human values and professional development in order to foster relationships built on trust with customers and produce excellent products,” says Gornati. Mombelli adds:

We are successful thanks to our cooperation with partners such as Interroll who not only provide us with superior quality solutions, but also give us technical advice resolve issues with the advanced applications in our distribution center. Fashion is very demanding, both in terms of the final product and the quality and punctuality of its delivery.

Advantages of the 24-volt drive technology

Zero-pressure accumulation conveyors, equipped with 24-volt RollerDrive from Interroll, combine low operating costs with high flexibility and can also be quickly and easily installed in conveyor systems. The individual conveyor lines are divided into zones, each of which is driven by a separate RollerDrive. The individual zones are equipped with sensors that automatically detect material, and intelligent control electronics ensure that only the zones containing material are driven.

In addition to courier, express and postal services and a range of producers, the fashion industry has long relied on Interroll solutions to increase the performance of the material flow in the age of thriving e-commerce. Zalando, Amazon, Hugo Boss, Gerry Weber and hessnatur are among the many fashion companies using systems with Interroll’s ultramodern sorters, conveyors and drive technologies.
