Interroll has set another milestone in its global innovation campaign with the launch of a new drum motor platform. The new generation of motors with fully modular synchronous and asynchronous designs are engineered for high performance and longevity, and to meet stringent hygiene requirements.
With its new drum motor platform Interroll shows once again how its product innovation delivers value for customers. The modular platform strategy serves as the basis for the many benefits of the new drum motor generation, which will be used initially with all asynchronous and synchronous motor types with an 80-mm diameter, and expanded to the entire product range in the future.
The strategy, recently used to implement a modular conveyor platform, offers customers and operators not only numerous new functions and handling features, but also short delivery times thanks to the products’ modular construction.

High flexibility in planning and implementation
These principles were also applied in developing the new drum motor platform, which has four patents pending. Thanks to its modular flexibility, the new drive generation makes it significantly easier to plan and implement highly efficient and user-specific material-handling solutions. Just one solution is enough to cover practically any application scenario. One reason is the drum motor’s expanded range of performance, which supports all current applications in the food industry, material handling and the production sector.
All new asynchronous and synchronous motors now fit in the same bracket, since they have identical shafts, and can be used for their respective applications accordingly. The extended number of gear stages allows the motors to operate with an even wider speed range. This makes it easier for system integrators to meet individual throughput requirements for a conveying solution. All options such as encoders, brakes, and backstops are also available for all motor variants and can be freely combined.
Even hygiene requirements in the food industry no longer pose headaches in planning. All drum motors in the new generation meet the highest requirements and are fitted with the highest degree of IP69k protection, which makes cleaning the facility much faster and easier and also reduces the risk of product contamination in the food processing area.
Durability of drum motor has increased by 300 percent
The technical linchpin of the new drum motor construction is the 30-mm shaft, which has an increased durability of about 300 percent compared to current motors. The shaft and stronger ball bearings allow for considerably higher belt tension, among other things. Because the shaft doesn’t bend under an increased load, thus sparing the ball bearing, users are kept safe even if the belt tracking is not optimal. In addition, a stable planetary gearbox in every motor type ensures high torque, vastly improved resistance to overloading and impact load, and comfortably low operating noise. The result is a highly reliable operation and a much longer lifespan.
Proven quality, easy installation
Nothing was left to chance in the development of the new generation of drum motors. The engineers on the Interroll Group’s Innovation Campus in Baal, Germany, put their new development through rigorous research and testing in conjunction with university partners before introducing it to the market. All critical components and mechanical connections were subjected to stringent endurance testing. The engineering laboratory's expertise has also been proven in practical tests with customers, ensuring certified quality.
