INTERROLL OPENS NEW CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR DRUM MOTORS

Hückelhoven-Baal, 22 April 2008. The Interroll Group, one of the world's leading suppliers of conveyor systems for advanced unit handling, opens its new global Centre of Excellence for Drum Motors in the Hückelhoven-Baal industrial area (south-west of Düsseldorf) on 22 April 2008.

Since January 2008, Interroll has been using 6,600 square metres of production space to produce Drum Motors for industrial applications. Interroll Drum Motors are used for such purposes as airport logistics and are typically installed on belt conveyors in the check-in area. Stainless steel versions are preferred by the Food industry sector, as the design of these Drum Motors meets the industry's stringent hygiene standards.

Designed for maximum customer benefit: quality, fast delivery, customer service

"Our new Centre of Excellence focuses firmly on maximum customer benefit. Providing top quality, innovative drive solutions for customers worldwide, fast delivery times and trouble-free customer service are some of our key objectives," explains Helmut Leuver, Managing Director of the centre. "This new centre will greatly strengthen our world-leading position in the field of Drum Motors for industrial applications. Our global Product Management, Research and Development, Production Technology, Strategic Purchasing and Logistics are now based in Hückelhoven-Baal, along with Technical Support for local assembly and production firms."

Infrastructure with an option for expansion

Some 130 employees are working to ensure an average of 40,000 Drum Motors per annum leave the Centre of Excellence in Baal - and in future this number will rise. Once its existing production capacity is exhausted, Interroll has the option of expanding the production area by an additional 20,000 m2.
The three-wing construction complex designed by the architectural engineering studio of F. P. Greven reflects the "best-in-class" aspirations of the world's leading supplier of Drum Motors. The impressive cylindrical entrance area, reminiscent of the drum shape of a Drum Motor, adjoins the rectangular office and administration area (1,200 m2 floor space) with an open-plan arrangement for efficient communication between the Product Management, Design and Research & Development teams. Assembly and manufacturing are housed in the production wing (6,600 m2) that is equipped with just-in-time workspaces and Kanban production systems.

Production strategy - on track for top performance
Increased picking productivity, shorter distances and space-saving materials handling are all part of the production system - or everything that comes under the generic heading of "lean management" - which ensures customers receive excellent quality and fast delivery times.

"In the second half of the year, the Drum Motor assembly line will be converted into u-shaped lines. These ergonomic, state-of-the-art production cells will allow Drum Motors to be assembled in a single, uninterrupted process," explains Jürgen Wik, Production Manager of Interroll Trommelmotoren GmbH in Hückelhoven-Baal. "This means our processing cycles can be substantially reduced, and with them the delivery times for our customers," underlines Wik. The one-piece flow approach also applies to parts production. A new high-performing production unit handles all the necessary work steps, so that shafts for Drum Motors can be produced in one step with the same machine. Interroll helped design the shaft centre that was specifically adapted to suit the requirements of Drum Motor production.
"At our new Centre of Excellence for Drum Motors we are aiming for "best-in-class" production standards within a short space of time. All of the points a Drum Motor has to pass through, from delivery of raw materials to shipping of the finished product, will be checked and adapted with this target in mind. This means we will be able to offer customers of today and tomorrow drive solutions with the added-value factor so crucial to commercial success," stated Helmut Leuver.
