Sharply Focused on Europe

Grosswallstadt/D. If an optician in Barcelona asks for 20 boxes of daily disposable contact lenses today, he can hand them over to his customers tomorrow. Overnight delivery of the invisible seeing aids is ensured by Eurologistik, a business unit of Ciba Vision. An Interroll Sorter, Belt Curves and Belt Conveyors play a pivotal role in the distribution.

Belt Curve

40,000 different types always in stockWhether in hard or soft materials, designed to create pearlescent effects or to help people who are allergic to pollen - Ciba Vision GmbH supplies the whole of Europe with contact lenses to protect and improve people's eyesight from their logistics center in Großwallstadt - a distribution feat that is hard to match. The Novartis subsidiary and number one supplier in Europe delivers high-quality contact lenses from an inventory of 40,000 different types to opticians and ophthalmologists, eye clinics and optometrists on a 24-hour basis.
Sorter

Clever sorting means fast delivery
In Großwallstadt two types of shipping orders are entrusted to various courier service companies: orders picked entirely automatically and those also completed by hand. A sophisticated logistics concept that is reflected in state-of-the-art materials handling hardware keeps the high-speed cycle constantly on the go.

Crossbelt sorter to be on the safe side
The entire stream of goods to be handled includes shipping cartons with maximum dimensions of 33 x 22 x 20 cm (13" x 8.7"x 7.8") down to the tiniest of little boxes measuring 5.8 x 3.5 x 2.8 cm (2.28" x 1.38" x 1.10").

Spiral Belt Curve

Every day, up to 25,000 shipments containing some of the company's range of 250,000 products set off on their daily journey to 15 European countries - and the figures are still rising. The success story behind this high-speed throughput that essentially depends on a highly efficient forecasting system for 40,000 ready-to-deliver stock keeping units plus custom-made lenses: a processing time of less than two hours per order, which in turn demands variable performance ability and exact coordination of the sortation and internal routing systems. Strong expansion was a further reason for the Großwallstadt flagship to switch to the Interroll crossbelt sorter: "We cannot allow ourselves to operate a sorter that breaks down when higher performance is needed ," confirmed Gasber.
"The Interroll sorter simply performs well thanks to its amazing mechanical components and high capacity." Particularly in view of the fact that it is capable of even greater capacities as regards speed if needed.

Ciba Vision

Quiet, compact, special: Vertical configuration with recirculation feature
Predestined to handle "critical" goods of the "small, lightweight and delicate" variety, the crossbelt sorter also offers a recirculation option. Nothing unusual for a sorter, perhaps, but actually quite eye-catching in Großwallstadt. With its space-saving vertical configuration featuring short walking distances the sorter drops off units that have not yet been discharged into their alloted destinations the second time around. If the entire distribution area looks good at first glance, its modest noise level confirms that silent actors in the belt curves, conveyor lines, accumulation roller conveyors and in the high-speed sorter of Interroll play a leading role in creating a quiet working environment. A must - because manual stock picking and processing of the make-to-order shipments demand utmost concentration of the 180 employees. Gasber: "We are highly satisfied with the conveyor equipment: good quality and reliable!"
