Application 068: Postal distribution center DPD, Germany

DPD sorts parcels weighing less than 2 kilos using the Interroll Crossbelt Sorter.

Depot 150 of DPD Geopost Deutschland GmbH in Frechen, near Cologne, is the perfect place to find out how things work at the sharp end of package sorting. Here, an enormous worldwide parcel routing system is leveraging conveyor technology designed to streamline local distribution in the Cologne-Bonn-Leverkusen conurbation.

Intelligence and creativity lead the way
Once the carriers reach their intended destination - before being inducted onto the sorter, the letters and small packages are scanned several times - only a position sensor and some compressed air is needed to activate discharge. And the delivery slides gently down one of the 172 chutes positioned on the sides. In other words, with the Interroll Crossbelt Sorter, there is no need for temperamental electrical drives, sliding contacts or electronic control elements.
"The process of installing and integrating the sorter at the DPD Depot 150 went very smoothly indeed. As the sorter modules had been pre-assembled by Interroll, we were able to execute the project much more efficiently," says Christian Heise, Project Manager at system supplier Budde Fördertechnik.

What our customer think
Since the Interroll Crossbelt Sorter was installed two years ago, its practical suitability has been tested on a daily basis. Operationally, it is excellent - even the smallest packages from other DPD depots are guided through the system without incident.
