Application 018: Automated distribution centre Shanghai Tobacco, China

Nowhere else in China seems quite as new as Shanghai with its 14 million inhabitants, enormous skyscrapers and gleaming shopping malls. The pulsating metropolis on the East China Sea is desperate for pacemakers that can meet the multiple requirements of the logistics market to a tee.

Chinas new No. 1
Supply chain management calls for structure, transparency and efficiency. The new distribution centre (DC) of the Shanghai Haiyan Logistics Development Company Limited has pioneered the way in this regard. Operating since 2005, it is seen as the most advanced automated distribution centre in China. The vital statistics of the DC Shanghai, planned and executed by systems integrator Swisslog are truly impressive. Daily capacity within the non-tobacco segment was more than tripled, from 30,000 to 100,000 packages, with the number of different items handled now totalling 13,000. The DC supplies over 6,600 outlets in the provinces of Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jaingsu and the major cities of China.

Functionality of the new distribution centre
Once the incoming goods have been processed by the IT system, they are automatically conveyed to the high-bay warehouse. Each storage position within this warehouse is determined by the IT system. Soon after the start of operations at the Shanghai distribution centre it became apparent that not all high-bay warehouses are the same. While slow-moving goods can be stored in static racks, there is only one solution for fast-moving goods: dynamic storage technology from Interroll with FIFO functionality - seamlessly integrated into JingXing racking that is up to twelve deep in places.

Automatically conveyed and manually picked
3,100 dynamic storage lanes, each with two pallet spaces, currently handle daily throughputs of up to 2,000 pallets, quickly, safely and efficiently. But dynamic is the key word, as once these wooden pallets (weighing up to 1,000 kg) are inserted by stacker cranes, they glide along triple-track roller conveyors to their destination without the addition of any external power source thanks to the inclined track. This was designed in a particularly fail-safe manner to customer specifications so that unloading and provisioning of goods for order picking is guaranteed to be "just in time".

Customer views
"The technical support we get from Interroll is as impressive as the quality of the Interroll dynamic storage system. A good indication of this is the fact that no maintenance work of any kind has been required since it was first commissioned."
